United States Steel Corp. plans to permanently close its blast furnace and most of its flat-rolled operations at Fairfield Works in Fairfield, Ala., the company announced Monday. "We have made some difficult decisions over the last year as part of our portfolio optimization," U.S. Steel President and CEO Mario Longhi said in a statement.
